Research Facilities


In addition to well-equipped research laboratories, the Department of Biology has core research facilities that include: genomics facility with an Affymetrix suite of instruments for DNA array hybridization, scanning and analysis; core molecular biology and protein chemistry instrumentation; facilities for cell growth, storage and processing; controlled-environment rooms; bioinformatics computer cluster; electron microscopy center, and additional types of microscopy, including confocal and fluorescence; phosphoimager and equipment for image analysis; research museum for vertebrate studies, and a wide variety of preparative and analytical instruments.

Facilities of the Marine Science Center, nearby in Nahant, include an ocean-going research vessel, a running seawater system and a robotics laboratory.

There are a number of core facilities in other units of the University that are also available to researchers from the Department of Biology, e.g., NMR spectrometers, including a new 700 MHz NMR, mass spectrometers, and additional computer clusters.
