Research Description

The goal of my research is to understand the mechanisms and functional consequences of steroid hormones in the nervous system. Hormones have pervasive influences on behavior both in vertebrates and invertebrates and at the level of individual neurons and neural circuits. I have investigated the seasonal and sex-specific acoustic communication in teleost fishes as well as steroid-mediated programmed cell death in lepidopteran (moths) during insect metamorphosis. An accompanying research interest in central pattern generators, motoneurons involved in behaviors in the absence of sensory input, has developed from my work on the teleost hindbrain vocal pattern generator.
