The
Ph.D. and M.S. programs seek to provide both a broad background
knowledge base and an in-depth study of a specialized area of
biology. The programs emphasize close interaction between graduate
students and faculty members in developing the intellectual
and experimental skills required for creative, independent research.
The Professional Science Masters Programs prepare students to
enter the research
management and technology transfer fields.
The
Department consists of 27 full-time faculty, 20 professional research
associates and postdoctoral fellows, and 100 graduate students.
The research specialties of the faculty are listed below.
Biology
faculty attract significant external funding to support research
in all of these areas. Graduate students interact closely with faculty
in developing the intellectual and experimental skills required
for their research. Students are encouraged to carry out laboratory
rotations in their first year before selecting their thesis advisor.
Northeastern
University is located in the Back Bay area of Boston with easy access
to a broad spectrum of academic, cultural, and recreational opportunities.
Graduate students in the Department of Biology are part of a large,
diverse, and dynamic academic community that includes students and
faculty members from related disciplines within the University,
such as chemistry, pharmaceutical sciences, psychology, physics,
and electrical engineering, as well as from the many other academic,
medical, and research institutions in the Boston area. Graduate
students can conduct studies at a number of associated facilities,
including the University's Marine
Science Center, Institute for Molecular Biotechnology, and the
Center for Subsurface Sensing and Imaging Systems.
Graduate
assistantships in the Department of Biology are available for full-time
students and provide remission of tuition and annual stipends of
up to $27,427.50. Assistantships are in the form of either teaching
assistantships, research assistantships. On a voluntary basis,
students can complete summer internships with one of several local biotechnology companies.

average of applicant scores in the Verbal and Quantitative sections
