Representing the first significant hire of its academic investment plan, Northeastern has announced the addition of Michail Sitkovsky, Ph.D. to the University’s Biotechnology Initiative.
Dr. Sitkovsky comes to Northeastern after over 20 distinguished years at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) as a principal investigator and chief of Biochemistry and Immunopharmacology section of the NIH’s Laboratory of Immunology. He is credited with discovery of the fundamental mechanism that protects normal tissues from collateral damage during acute inflammation. This discovery, published in the journal Nature in 2001, had immediate implication in the development of novel anti-cancer strategies and approaches to improve immune response, e.g. the development of better vaccines. These discoveries will be extended at Northeastern in Dr. Sitkovsky’s role as the Eleanor Black Chair and professor of immunophysiology and pharmaceutical biotechnology.
“The addition of Dr. Sitkovsky as the first professor hired under our academic investment plan is just the beginning of the University’s major commitment to investing in the future of our research,” said Northeastern University President Richard M. Freeland. “The Biotechnology Initiative at Northeastern is a major focus of the University given the significant biotechnology center that Boston has become and we believe Dr. Sitkovsky will play a prominent role in developing research and educational interactions with the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries within the Commonwealth. One of unique educational components centered of Dr. Sitkovsky’s work will be an area of concentration dedicated to educating new scientists in the multidisciplinary field of biotechnology.
