About the Biology Minor

To accommodate the needs of students majoring in different fields, the biology minor requirements have been designed in a flexible way to ensure that course selection is sound and appropriate to the student's background.

The Minor consists of a minimum of six (6) semester courses.

General Considerations

  • All courses must be taken for a letter grade.
  • All courses must carry 4 or more semester credits.
  • Restriction: This minor is not available for students who major in Biochemistry, Behavioral Neuroscience or any dual major that involves Biology.

Course Requirements

A minimum of six courses are required for the Biology Minor. (50% of the courses must be taken in NU's Biology department.)

Required Biology Courses

Complete five biology (BIO) courses.  Three of the courses must be intermediate to advanced (BIOU301-BIOU599).

Breadth Course

Choose one more course from BIO, CHM, GEO, MTH, or PHY. (300 to 500 level courses)

Other Requirements

  • At least 3 courses must include a lab
  • Maintain a GPA = 2.0 or higher
  • Register with Biology Minor Advisor by completing an Arts & Sciences Petition Form available at 1 Meserve Hall
  • Each student's biology minor petition must receive the signed approval of the Biology Minor Advisor before the student embarks on the program.
